How safe is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been used safely and effectively for literally thousands of years. Many modern research studies have investigated the safety of Acupuncture and have found that it is a remarkably safe treatment for a huge variety of conditions.top of page

Are there any side effects to Acupuncture?
When practiced by a thoroughly trained TCM practitioner, negative side effects almost never occur. The only side effects known to occur from acupuncture include bruising at the needle site, pneumothorax, and nerve damage. These are very rare, and easily avoided by a well trained professional.top of page

Does Acupuncture hurt?
Occasionally a needle can elicit a stinging sensation upon insertion, but generally the needling experience is surprisingly comfortable. An often subtle, dull aching sensation is generally sought after as part of the acupuncture experience. This sensation is called "De Qi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which means "the arrival of Qi", and is considered therapeutically beneificial. In addition, most patients report a general sense of well-being during and after acupuncture treatments.top of page

Where do the needles go?
Acupuncture needles are placed in specific locations along the acupuncture meridians (for more information on this topic, please visit our acupuncture page). These locations are called acupuncture points. Points are chosen based on the conditions being treated, as well as the specific constitutional diagnosis of the patient.top of page

Are the needles sterile or are they reused?
Each sterile needle is designed for a single use, is removed from it's package just before insertion, and is disposed of as medical waste when it is removed.top of page

How often do I have to come?
This is a case specific issue that will be addressed by your practitioner.top of page

How can I prepare for my session?
Try to carve out enough time to relax before and after treatment when possible, and it is generally a good idea to have eaten something before coming to your acupuncture session.top of page
